IELTS Information

IELTS = International English Language Testing System

The IELTS exam is used by universities to assess English language skills. IELTS is used in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, but is becoming popular with Canadian schools.

It has a nine-point scoring band. Nine is equal to a well-educated native-English speaker.  There are 2 test formats – general and academic, and four areas of skills testing: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Listening is 30 minutes, Reading is 60 minutes, writing is 60 minutes, and speaking takes 11–14 minutes. The total test is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The listening, reading, and writing tests are done at the same time. However, the speaking test may be the same day or a few days before or after – this depends on the travel schedule of the examiners.

To get into an undergraduate university program, the general score required is 5.5 overall. For post-grad you need a 6.5 overall. The score depends on the university – some ask for higher scores.

You can take the test all over the world, and have to pay a fee.  Expect to pay around $200 USD, but this depends on your country. You can take the test as many times as you like. There is no time limit to re-sitting the test if you do not get the score you want.

According tho their website: “Over 1.4 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. IELTS is recognised by more than 6000 institutions in over 135 countries.”
