Phrasal verbs with GIVE

A phrasal verb is created with a verb + 1, 2, or 3 particles.

Unfortunately, there are no simple rules for phrasal verbs – you just have to think of each one as a unique verb, and memorize it!

give up = stop doing something

I want to lose weight, so I’m giving up chocolate.

give in = no longer try to stop yourself from doing something that you want to do

You have to study for exams this weekend, so don’t give in if someone invites you to a party!

give away = give something to somebody for free

I have too many clothes. I’m giving some away to a charity.

give out = hand over/offer something to a group of people

My company is going to give out brochures at the conference next week.
