The feeling of being very worried about something.

Examples:

At exam time, James always feels a lot of anxiety.

Anxiety is something we all experience, but some people worry more than others.

To believe something, even if you do not know it is true.

Examples:

Never assume you know the correct answer.  Ask if you are unsure.

He assumed I had enough money to buy the house – that was very silly of him!

agony

Very strong pain or heartache.

Examples:

Brian was in agony when his wife died.

Breaking my leg was agony!

appetite

Apetite

Wanting food.

Examples:

Michael has a big appetite for sweet food.

When I exercise my appetite increases.

Example:

I love going to the gallery to see the modern art.

ancestor

A member of your family who lived in the past.

Example:

A: “Who is that a painting of?”
B: “It is an ancestor of mine – my great-great-great grandfather.”

anarchy

/ˈænɑrki/ (n)

A situation in which nobody is in charge or command.

Example:

Anarchy is very dangerous, because crime starts to increase.

ache

A pain in an area of your body.

Example:

I have an ache in my stomach. I am going to stay home from work today.

antiseptic

/ˌæntəˈsɛptɪk/ (n)

A chemical used to clean a cut or wound.

Example:

James hurt his knee when he fell off his bike, so I cleaned the cut with an antiseptic and put a bandage over it.

astounding

/əˈstaʊndɪŋ/ (adj)

Something that surprises you so much that you have difficulty believing it.

Example:

The recent growth in the stock market has been astounding. I hope it continues!
